Importance: This is one of Jane's first statements and it could be a sign that she is a less-than-honorable narrator, willing to say whatever she feels is necessary to reach her goals. However, Jane really has no goals as far as her narration to the reader goes, and her willingness to say that she is selfish will probably make her a more reliable narrator in the eyes of most readers.
