Summary
Chapter 45, “In Which I Fail,” is from Jane's perspective and opens with a quote from a bounty hunter who says the only rules of the frontier are to “shoot first and aim well” (500). Jane is furious that Gideon has “bested” her again and that Katherine is involved. Daniel apologizes, saying “It was the only way” (500). Jane feels icy with fury, which melts a little when Katherine smiles at her. They walk only a few minutes to reach Gideon's camp. Katherine and Jane are locked in a cage while Daniel and Gideon go into another room. Two guards leave, knowing they do not want to be present for what is happening in that room.
