Summary
Part Two is titled The Road to Perdition, and opens “one year and five months later” (271). Chapter 24, “Notes on a Card Game,” is from Katherine's perspective and opens with a quote from Horace Greeley in which he urges young men to “go west and help save this country from the Undead Plague” (272). Katherine is aboard a ship called the Capitan, playing poker with her friend Carolina Jones, and she wins, having learned to read Carolina and having paid a servant to signal to her what the other players are holding. Caroline reveals he paid the servant as well, but Katherine paid him more. Katherine is struggling with her grief over Jane's death. They will arrive in San Francisco, California, soon, and Katherine plans to open a haberdashery, becoming a business owner in order to provide a safe, stable life for Lily...
