Summary
Chapter 19, “In Which I Get the Lay of the Land,” is from Jane's perspective and opens with a quote from Shakespeare's Timon of Athens about mercy. Jane is furious that Gideon is peddling his "snake oil." Jane knows Katherine is angry and that it is too soon to try to talk to her. A short time later, Jane tries to apologize but Sue interrupts, saying that Jane has to begin with “I'm sorry.” Jane sarcastically thanks Sue then offers a heartfelt apology and Katherine accepts, though she says she is still hurt. Ida joins them and shows them that someone has torn down the rear gate. Jane notices that Callie seems especially shaken and puts it down to the fact that Nicodemus is her home. They quickly agree to gather up members of the Summerland patrol and anyone else who wants...
