Summary
Chapter 9, “In Which I Learn the Fate of Baltimore,” is from Jane's perspective and opens with a quote from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Jane is harassed as she walks through town with Daniel. She sees several girls from Miss Preston's and from Summerland's patrols holding back the men shouting at Jane. Miss Duncan talks to Jane and one of her first statements is that she did not know “the extent of Miss Preston's treachery” (104) until Jane and Katherine disappeared. (In the first novel of this series, Miss Preston handed Jane and Katherine over to a corrupt mayor, as she had been providing him with girls for some time.) Jane is surprised to discover Miss Duncan is the deputy and soon learns the mayor is black.
