Summary
In Chapter 3, Vesta completes Magda's questionnaire. She decides Magda was 19 and restless. Her restlessness disgusted people in Levant. Vesta then writes a detailed description of Magda’s appearance: an odd and unexpected beauty. She returns to Magda's arrival in Levant: after working for McDonald's she had few friends, with the exception of Blake. Her low wage made finding housing difficult, so she rented a basement room from Blake's mother, Shirley. Shirley would have been secretive about Magda. Walter was also secretive, which worried Vesta. Someone should have worried about Magda.
Thinking of Magda's childhood, Vesta decides Magda’s father had an uncouth sense of humor. In the U.S., she would have told people her father abused her. After the McDonald's work ended, Magda ran away to avoid returning home. She wrote a note to her parents saying: "Don't try to find me...
