Summary
A week later, Kathleen returned and Emmy told her how much Mrs. Bird had been missing her. The pair began chatting before Mrs. Bird silently walked in on them looking furious. The day before, Mrs. Bird had opened the mail herself and found a letter. She handed the letter to Mr. Collins to read. It was from Mrs. Wardynski’s mother. She had written to Mrs. Bird to inform her that her daughter had married without permission and eloped to Scotland with the Polish airman. Dolly was 17 and her husband was 21. Emmy had not been aware of the age difference, nor that Dolly would go behind her parents’ back.
