Summary
In Chapter 32, Laura recalls the walk that the students made along the beach towards Zwin. Laura found herself slowing down in order to be left behind with Herman. He was filming the beach sand. He walked past her and turned back, panning up to her face as he walked backwards. He said that he was “going to tell [Laura] something now,” and that she didn’t have to say anything but that he wanted it “on film” (239). Laura looked around and found that they were out of the earshot of the others. Herman told her that she was the only one he had ever wanted. He said that she didn't have to say anything and that if she just kept looking he “could see” what she felt (240). Laura thought about walking away, but instead looked right into the camera lens.
