Summary
November 1: letter to Martin. When Justyce gets home from the Halloween party, he finds a missed call from SJ. He phones her back and transcribes it. She says she was thinking of Justyce all night, then backtracks that she saw photos of the costumes and wants to know what happened. Justyce tells the whole story, though he has “no clue why” (48). He explains his difficult choice at the end of the night, when leaving with the others justified Trey’s belief that he is a “race-traitor,” while staying would prove Officer Castillo’s assumption that all black men are the same (48). He is glad that he stops himself from using the “n-word” (48). SJ listens in supportive silence while Justyce talks about his feelings of impotence in the face of Jared’s prejudice.
