Summary

The novel shifts to May 2016. Edward has still not decided what to do with the $7 million check sent to him by Jax Lassio. Edward receives a letter from a friend of Jax’s. The letter says that Jax recently died while surfing, and that Jax still wanted Edward to have the money. Edward decides to accept the money, but he wants to donate it to good causes rather than simply keep it for himself. Edward and John then decide to make a project of gathering as much information about each of the plane passengers, in order to honor their memories. The novel then shifts back to the flight. The pilots continue to struggle to regain control of the plane. Benjamin speaks to the old woman next to him, who is on her way to California to retire.
