Summary
In pages 1 - 73, when Lena Beck was 23, she disappeared. Thirteen years later, police still have not found her.
In "Lena," Lena narrates her confusion and entrapment. Though she loves her two children, she sometimes considers killing her husband.
In "Hannah," Lena's daughter Hannah recalls "the night of the accident" (3). After running from their cabin, a car hit Lena. When the ambulance arrived, Hannah followed Lena into the vehicle. Several days later, Hannah remains in the hospital. Psychiatrists question her about her homelife. The doctor, Sister Ruth, does not seem to understand her. Hannah also feels bad her brother, Jonathan, is still at the cabin cleaning up blood stains. Though she has a father, she tells Sister Ruth they cannot call him.
She wants to see her mother, but refuses to talk about her. When Sister Ruth asks where she and her family live...
