Summary

Pelosi's invitation, combined with advice from a lawyer friend, prompts Jose to come to the realization that: "I refuse to let a presidency scare me from my own country. I refuse to live a life of fear defined by a government that doesn't even know why it fears what it fears" (199). Jose decides that "Citizenship is showing up" (199). He accepts Pelosi's invitation and writes another transparent article on this theme. After attending the joint session, Jose moves out of his apartment, puts his things in storage, and begins life without a permanent address.

In July 2014, Jose is detained in a cell with a group of young boys no older than twelve. He describes the desolation of the situation and the confusion and fear of the young detainees around him. Jose imagines what he would say to the young boys about immigration, globalization...
