Summary

In Act Two, "The Townspeople Tell the Story of Momma Galya," "Townspeople Speak of Galya on Her Green Bicycle," the townspeople describe Momma Galya Armolinskaya, a 53-year-old theater owner. When the soldiers attempt to arrest her, she bikes away.

In "When Momma Galya First Protested," Momma Galya smokes and yells at a soldier. Rumors of her courage and defiance spread throughout Vasenka.

In "A Bundle of Laundry," Alfonso's body continues swinging in the square. While soldiers watch "two of Momma Galya's puppeteers" kissing, Momma Galya sneaks into a checkpoint and steals Anushka, wrapped in linens (53).

In "What Are Days," the speaker likens "the days of May" to men walking to prison (54).
