Summary
In "I, This Body," at Sonya's funeral, Alfonso holds Anushka in a "green handkerchief" (36). He is unhappy to be alive without Sonya. He thinks of bathing with and kissing her. He is alone in the apartment with the baby, only three days old, observing the snow left from Sonya's boots.
In "Her Dresses," Alfonso goes through Sonya's clothes. He tries on her "red socks" (37).
In "Elegy," Alfonso writes a six-word elegy for Sonya.
In "Above Blue Tin Roofs, Deafness," Vasenka boys "drag a drunk soldier" into the piazza (39). They want to kill him. They spit on him. Alfonso puts on Sonya's socks and joins the boys. Eventually, Alfonso leaps on the soldier and slits his chest. Everyone watches.
