What are some of the benefits of writing a science book in a less formal, more narrative format like this book as opposed to writing a textbook? Are there any downsides?

The fact that the authors are able to express their opinions in this type of book instead of sticking purely to the facts is both a pro and a con. It can sometimes blur the line between fact and opinion, but it also makes the facts seem more interesting and more pressing. Some of the topics dealt with in this book are fairly frightening, and could leave the reader feeling helpless, but by addressing the audience directly Osterholm and Olshaker are able to both reassure the reader and present them with tangible, helpful courses of action.

What are some of the standards to which Osterholm holds individuals when it comes to public health? What level of responsibility does he expect people to take?
