Nightshade is the small town in California where the novel takes place. Daisy describes the town as full of strange occurrences and odd inhabitants. Nightshade is formally a frontier town that is a couple of hundred years old.

Slim's Diner is a local restaurant in Nightshade. It is where Daisy asks Ryan to meet her at the beginning of the novel. It is also Daisy's favorite place to eat. The diner possesses a jukebox that turns itself on and off and plays the songs that it wants to play.
