Moss
Moss's character symbolizes love and joy. Despite the wickedness and terror of the novel's narrative reality, Moss is able to retain a gracious and kind spirit. She sees the good, not only in her friends, but in her enemies. When Moss is absent, all of the creatures seem to retain a facet of her being. She allows the others to carry on even in the greatest danger. The author uses her character to illustrate the indestructibility of the connection between beings.
The Company
The Company symbolizes corrupt socio-political power. Having assumed control of the City, and all lives, the Company wreaks havoc on humanity and nature alike. The entity has a disregard for vulnerable beings and for the wellbeing of the planet. Its elusive nature, and the shady facets of its activity resemble those of mass economic powers in the reader's contemporary reality.
