Summary
For several weeks, the Elephant has courted the Governor’s daughter Melissa. He asks her to accompany him to, as he puts it, “look into her father’s affairs” (341) and she agrees. They visit Sister Paul and she relates to them the same story she told Sportcoat. A week after visiting Sister Paul, they arrive at the Church in the middle of the night. Melissa waits in the car as the Elephant and Sportcoat get to work. They manage to find a metal box hidden in the cinder block, and sure enough the Venus is in the box, still intact. The Elephant expresses his gratitude to Sportcoat, and Sportcoat asks him to help recover the Christmas club money.
