Summary
After arriving back at the cause, Sportcoat and Sausage discuss Sportcoat’s meeting with the Elephant. Sportcoat describes the Elephant as being a good and kind man. Hot Sausage says he should have taken the money, and points out that the Elephant’s men could have killed Hettie for all they know. Sportcoat brushes the possibility aside, recalling the Elephant praising Hettie’s kindness. Sportcoat also says that Hettie is in a good place now, and he still talks to her almost every day. Hot Sausage, changing the subject, reminds Sportcoat about Deems and points out that Sportcoat may soon wind up joining his wife if he is not careful. Sportcoat asks for his umpire uniform and says he will approach Deems and ask him to pitch a baseball game.
