Summary
The Elephant hears about the shooting from a cop who drives past his home. While the shooting itself doesn’t bother him, he does become worried at the prospect of more cops in his neighborhood, and how that will affect his illegal businesses. The Elephant recalls a conversation he had with a potential customer two weeks prior, an elderly Irish singer named Driscoll Sturgess. He claims to have known the Elephant’s late father, Guido, and asks him to bring something to Kennedy Airport. At first, the Elephant is inclined to decline, but Driscoll reveals that he is known as “The Governor”.
The Elephant recalls his father mentioning the nickname and knows that it means that Driscoll is likely powerful and important in his own right, but he cannot recall exactly who he is or what he does. The Elephant reflects on...
