Summary
In Part II, "Road Trip," Alexandra and J visit Davis before driving to Ithaca. J's parents give them a car. Alexandra tries to rationalize leaving her family.
On the drive, Alexandra studies the card her coworkers gave her. She no longer understands who they are to her, or what her job title is. Then she gets excited for the trip. Arriving in Ithaca, however, still scares her.
While J drives, Alexandra looks up the history of the term "trailing spouse," words which evoke "a rolling suitcase bumbling along behind someone" (93). Though she tries focusing on the trip, she cannot quiet her mind. She keeps looking things up on her phone about moving, stress, and traveling.
