Summary
In Chapter 49, Gem pushes Ana out of the way and they watch as the monster rises. Eight tentacles wrap around the Nautilus. Ana pees in her wet suit. Ana is amazed at the beauty of the giant Pacific octopus even while she is terrified. She estimates the weight at a ton with tentacle span of 50 meters (164 feet). Cooper shouts about the octopus and Gem yells that electricity around the ship's hull might help. The shock seems to make it wrap tighter. Ana and Ester realize the octopus is a male and he likes the electricity. They nickname him Romeo. He immerses them in an ink cloud for a moment.
