Self-Discovery
"Daughter of Smoke and Bone" is the tale of Karou, an apparently normal human girl who lives a double life, between the human world and Elsewhere, the magical land she is connected to. As such, Karou has something of a split identity. The two worlds did not seem to connect well, and she often felt alienated and alone as a result. Karou often said that she felt like she belonged somewhere else.
It turns out that these feelings corresponded to reality in the book. For, Karou was running errands for Brimstone, who knew but did not inform her that she was in fact Madrigal reborn in human form. Her original identity, Madrigal, was deeply connected to an apparent enemy, Akiva, who she once had a romantic relationship with. The new relationship with Akiva and Karou is initially antagonistic but becomes more complicated as the two discover Karou's true...
