The Horrors of World War II
Any modern reader of Daughter of Moloka’i already knows of the atrocities that happened during World War II, but this book centers the plight of the Japanese in America as they are held captive in internment camps despite not having done anything wrong nor having displayed any proclivity or desire to subvert the United States’s war effort. The dehumanization of the Japanese in these camps is shown in the harsh conditions they had to endure and through the way that they were separated from the rest of the country visibly, first by the closing of curtains and then through their being sent to Manzanar, separated from the rest of the country not just by fences but by entire mountains.
