Summary
Chapter 9 switches back to Clearsight's perspective. She is relieved when she is finally out of Allknowing's class. Another teacher shows Clearsight around and points out the class pets, a pair of scavengers that are adorable, fascinating, and fierce. Clearsight wonders what they eat and a mind reader named Listener answers the question. The teacher hands Clearsight over to Listener who talks more about the school. Clearsight does not know how to shield her thoughts and has already figured out that timelines that include Listener's friendship are happier than those without her. Listener agrees not to probe into Clearsight's mind and says she does not want to know anything about her future. Listener wants to release the scavengers because she feels they have dragon-like emotions and are unhappy in captivity. Clearsight impulsively offers to help.
