Good versus Evil

The primary plot throughout the entire novel is that of good versus evil. While it is presented in a light-hearted manner, Susannah struggles with the state of mind of the ghosts and people she deals with in the novel. For example, the ghost of a Maria de Silva and Felix Diego are on the evil side.

By the end, Susannah struggles with whether or not Paul Slater is good or evil. When he confirms Susannah's suspicions about being a mediator, this solidifies evilness for Susannah. The fact that Paul never tried to help Jack, who was struggling with seeing ghosts, also makes it seem to Suze as if Paul is on the evil side.
