Summary
In Chapter 4, Haris reminisced about when, a week after Jim had almost broken the boy’s arm, he came to Haris’ room and tried to justify his intimidation and treatment of the woman, her son, and the grandfather. However, he could not persuade Haris to agree with him.
Jim said Haris was his friend and had brought in a bottle of rum that his wife had sent him for his birthday. He also talked about his sun tattoo on his stomach. He referred to war as his home. Haris worried that, as Jim had spent many years in war and was hardened, what if his fate would also be to become hardened in the same way?
