Point of View
Darius the Great is Not Okay is written from the first-person narrative perspective of its protagonist, Darius Kellner. His point of view is characterized largely by his depression, which leads him to think critically of himself and life generally. Darius has such little self-confidence that he constantly questions what motivates other characters to interact with him. This skepticism pervades the first half of the novel when Darius struggles with adjusting to Yazd and his Persian relatives. As Darius gradually grows more reassured of himself, his narration becomes increasingly positive. By the end of the story, Darius has transformed from a cynical teenager into an optimistic young man. This emotional development is reflected in his narration, which becomes more forgiving and hopeful as the novel progresses.
