Mamou and Babou’s House
Mamou and Babou’s house is the most significant setting in Darius the Great is Not Okay because most of the major action from the text occurs there. Within the house, Darius establishes new relationships and strengthens existing connections with his Persian relatives. He learns more about his culture, history, and family during meals and tea shared within those walls. Darius also first meets Sohrab in Mamou and Babou’s backyard, an encounter that initiates their friendship and positively transforms Darius’ self-concept. Though the Mamou and Babou’s house differs from his home in North Carolina, Darius grows increasingly comfortable there throughout their visit until he eventually feels reluctant to leave.
