Summary

Here is a picture of Erika playing her violin. She is the youngest in the Lodz orchestra. There is a picture of Daniel on his 16th birthday with his arm around Rosa. He recalls that the youth group continues to meet and makes plans for the next deportation. They want to find places for people to hide. Rosa tells Daniel about two children whose father steals their rations. She wants to help them by breaking into their apartment and stealing the father's rations. They do just that, and then Daniel and Friedrich find a neighbor dead in his apartment and take all the furniture to burn so as to keep warm. Daniel's mother is constantly sick that winter.
