In chapter twenty-eight, Reverend and Mrs. Gascoigne soon learn of Gwendolyn's engagement and arrive to congratulate her. Anna manages to be congratulatory, though she admits to having harbored the hope that Gwendolyn, now faced with the financial ruin, might look more favorably upon Rex. Lush writes a letter to Sir Hugo, telling him of the engagement.
