Summary
In "The Lookout," a woman called The Lady Upstairs lived in the tower of a hotel. She longed to tell "the daughter of the current owner" not to be afraid of her (73). The girl, however, was like everyone: she could not see or sense The Lady unless she "took on shape" (73). The girl had now become a woman, and stopped spending time at the hotel. She, like the guests and employees, had ugly feelings attached to the place. The Lady Upstairs sometimes tried to look for whatever it was that was scaring people, but "she had never managed it" (74).
Finally Elina arrived at the hotel. She was not doing well, and had decided to take "leave from the university" (75). She stopped talking to everyone and stopped going to therapy, though she was still "taking the pills" (75). She had...
