Summary
In “Spring 1978”, Colleen felt ostracized after the hearing. She knew that the community was upset with her for colluding with an environmentalist and jeopardizing their ability to harvest Damnation Grove. She spoke with Daniel who explained that he found “dioxin contaminant[s]” in the water samples from her tap (348). Colleen was still angry with him for using her as a public example and did not want to associate with him anymore. Helen and Carl’s home was burned down after they spoke out against the sprays, and she was afraid that her family would be targeted next.
