Mental Health
Because most of the story takes place in a residential treatment facility and revolves around people learning to deal with the issues that lead them to be there, the novel centers on the theme of mental health. By showing Callie’s perspective as she learns better ways to take care of herself and her emotional needs McCormick provides insight into a person with mental health problems and their resulting struggles. McCormick’s depiction of a good therapist shows the value of seeking help when in need.
Callie’s cutting issues are discovered to be her way of dealing with situations that cause emotions she does not know how to deal with. She takes on responsibility for situations beyond her control and the actions of others, which causes her to feel overwhelmed, resulting in the compulsion to cut herself as a release.
