Callie
Callie is the fifteen-year-old narrator of the novel. She has been committed to Sea Pines residential treatment facility because a substitute nurse noticed evidence that she had been cutting herself. Callie cares deeply about her brother, who suffers from severe asthma, and during his first asthma attack saved his life by administering CPR and running for help.
When Callie first enters Sea Pines she refuses to speak to anyone, including her family during visiting day. She fears that the people around her will think she is crazy. Callie isolates herself both physically and emotionally out of a sense of consideration, not wanting to burden others with her issues.
As Callie adjusts to life as Sea Pines she begins to want to create connections like those she sees between the girls around her. After slipping up and cutting herself, Callie begins to open up to the people around her...
