Leonie's House
The short story's opening scene takes place at Leonie's house. Leonie, Myrna, and Chrissy sit outside in Leonie's backyard under her umbrella. The umbrella is meant to guard the women's heads from the "small, green, hard, pockmarked apple[s]" that are constantly falling from the overshadowing "ancient apple tree" (5). Throughout the visit, the friends intermittently remark upon the falling apples, badgering Leonie to cut down the offending branches. Meanwhile, the friends eat fine cheese and drink gin and tonics, while plotting their revenge against their friend Fern's enemies. The afternoon ends abruptly when Leonie tells her friends they have to leave so that she can take her medications.
Chrissy's House
The friends reconvene at Chrissy's house for another regularly-scheduled meeting near the end of the short story. While here, they sit outside in Chrissy's yard, eat more cheese, and continue plotting their revenge. During this meeting, they...
