Summary

Myrna goes to visit Fern. She, Leonie, and Chrissy rotate visiting her every Wednesday. “She walks south,” studying the various houses in the neighborhood and reflecting on the past (13). The neighborhood has changed since she and her husband moved there years prior. It is almost unrecognizable now. Myrna notices how the plants and leaves are changing now that it is the end of the summer. She remembers “a student production of Macbeth” years ago, trying to recall if Chrissy was in the play (14). The production makes her think about the revenge that has “been passed along from Fern to the three of them” (14).

Years prior, Fern was attacked by eight or nine male writers who sabotaged her career. Fern was “a successful novelist and short-story writer” (15). Myrna, Leonie, and Chrissy also wrote and participated in the literary community when they were students. Eventually...
