Summary
Over drinks and cheese at Leonie’s house, Leonie, Myrna, and Chrissy discuss how to murder their friend Fern’s enemies. They do not plan to tell Fern their plan. When they start reminiscing about being in college together, Myrna warns against nostalgia (4). Referencing Shakespeare, they try to decide if they should murder the men “one-on-one, or all . . . together” (4). They have these gatherings regularly and always source their cheese from Nancy’s Cheese Shop.
Apples fall from the tree overhead, interrupting the conversation, Myrna and Chrissy press Leonie about cutting off the branches, but Leonie is worried about upsetting the neighbors and killing the tree. She then references her own imminent death, as she has cancer. Sometimes Myrna wonders how long Leonie will take to die (5). She does not want her to die, but often feels annoyed when Leonie talks about her ailments...
