Cujo is the third story by Stephen King that is set in the fictional town of Castle Rock. King reaches back to the first book set in Castle Rock, Dead Zone, for a source of evil that once lived in Castle Rock, the serial killer Frank Dodd. King begins his novel with mention of Dodd, using him to explain how monsters never really die.

Tad Trenton wakes in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and comes back to bed to find a monster peering at him from his closet. Tad screams for his parents, who come and offer him words of comfort.
