Treatment of the Mentally Ill
This novel takes place in a mental ward. The patients on this ward are often mistreated and over medicated. Some of the patients on the ward are not really mentally ill, but they have medical conditions that cause them to behave oddly, such as the two men who have epilepsy. One man comes to this ward with no mental disease at all, but is treated as though he is psychotic, eventually suffering a full lobotomy.
The novel attempts to address changes that have taken place in the care of the mentally ill in recent years to the publication. The mentally ill were often hidden away and treated like animals in the early years of the previous century.
