Bobby Shaftoe has been in Sweden for six months and is having an affair with a woman named Julieta.

Randy wants to dive to see the shipwreck. He is beginning to take a romantic interest in Amy. The divers previously brought up an aluminum briefcase that they found on the sunken U-boat. It contains gold rimmed spectacles, a fountain pen and a lot of soggy paper. Doug says they think it belonged to Rudolph von Hacklheber. There is an envelope with the words "Waterhouse Lavender Rose."

Lawrence Waterhouse is in Brisbane and reports to the assigned place. An Army major tells him that they are worried about the Japanese changing their codes. The Japanese don't know their codes have been broken.
