Summary
In Chapter 9, “Where Are We Going,” Zauner recalls living in Seoul with Eunmi Emo for six weeks during a summer language program she took in college. They bonded over food and drinks, and one day Eunmi Emo asked Zauner a philosophical question. She is asked to imagine she is on a journey with five animals: a lion, horse, cow, monkey, and lamb. There are four stops in the journey, and at each stop she must give up an animal, so only one remains. Which would she keep? Zauner chose the monkey, which Eunmi Emo said represents her child. Eunmi Emo said Chongmi had chosen the same. Two and a half years later, Eunmi Emo died from cancer. Zauner recalls attending the funeral with her parents.
