Chapters 13-14 and Epilogue Summary
The prosecutor asks Scarpetta to come to his office for questioning. On advice from Grueman, Scarpetta refuses. At the end of January, Scarpetta is called to testify before a grand jury regarding the deaths of Susan Story and Frank Donahue. In the days prior to her grand jury appearance, Scarpetta is warned by Marino that the prosecutor's evidence is circumstantial, but compelling. Scarpetta is not concerned; however, Scarpetta is still curious what the killer was after when he killed Jennifer Deighton. Scarpetta calls Jennifer's ex-husband and is told that he will not speak to her unless she comes to Florida where he can see her face to face. Scarpetta agrees, flying to Miami first to take Lucy home and then on to Mr. Travers in Fort Meyers Beach. Travers is a charming older man who likes Scarpetta...
