Chapter 9 Summary
Back in Richmond, Scarpetta encounters Marino. Over lunch, Marino awkwardly expresses his concern about the gossip that Jason Story is perpetrating in the papers despite the fact that Marino has learned it was because of her husband that Susan needed money in the first place. Marino warns Scarpetta that she does not have too many friends because of her tendency to be abrasive, so she might want to watch her back. Afterward, Scarpetta goes to the morgue and searches Susan's office, trying to find some memos she sent to Susan expressing her appreciation of Susan's hard work. Scarpetta cannot find any. Back in her own office, Scarpetta looks for her copies of the same memos, but cannot find them either. Scarpetta goes to Ben Stevens' office, trying to see if he took the files, discovering only a toiletry kit that contains a cologne...
