Part 1: Chapters 3-7 Summary
In Chapter 3, Katie recalls meeting Daniel and the many times he asked about her family. Katie finds herself telling Daniel the history of the area and of the three families who first settled around Crow Lake, rather than her own history. They were Frank Janie, Stanley Vernon, and Jackson Pye. As she tells Daniel the story of the area, Katie recalls a story that Miss Vernon, the daughter of one of the original founding families, had told her about how one of the sons of Jackson Pye running away after falling in the frozen lake out of fear of his father's punishment.
