Summary
In Chapter 18, as they hurried toward Three Gables, Charles got a sense of how dangerous the situation there really was. When they arrived, Sophia showed them where Josephine had been swinging on a door in the old washhouse when a marble door stop, apparently rigged as a booby trap, hit her on the head. It was a low door and Tavener was able to reach the top of it with his hand. Tavener commented that the whole proposition was chancy since there was no guarantee that Sophia would be hit by the doorstop when it fell. He noticed fresh dents in the floor where it appeared someone had practiced with the piece of marble to make sure it fell correctly.
