Justine

Justine is one of the first person narrators and protagonists of the novel. Her mother is Lula; her sisters are Dee and Josie, and her daughter is Reney. When she is a young girl, her father leaves the family. As the youngest of the daughters, Justine grows up primarily with her mother. When she is 15 years old, she feels trapped. In order to seize some sense of freedom, she sneaks out with Russell Gibson. After Russell rapes her, Justine feels guilty. She does not want to tell her mother what happened. Instead, she contacts her father, and tells Lula she wants to see him. She thinks that freedom is attached to another person. If she can find someone who will take her away from her home, she thinks she will be able to find her truest sense of self.
