Point of View

This novel is written using a first-person narrator, and is narrated by the main character, Evie. Evie’s narration is central to the novel’s themes and message, as the novel is less about the events that transpire in Evie’s life, and more about the inner emotions and transformations that occur within Evie as she experiences those events. For example, early in the novel, there is significant tension as to whether or not Evie’s fiancé, Liam, is safe aboard his long-haul fishing boat in the days immediately before their wedding, when Evie is initially visited by her mother. However, this tension is eventually completely dissolved about midway through the novel, when a series of chapters explores the nature of Evie and Liam’s marriage after they have been married for ten years.
