Summary
In the chapter “Rain,” Evie recalls a woman from her childhood named Mary, who piloted the local ferry, run a summer camp for kids, and was deeply connected to everything going on at Winter Island. Dad begins a romantic relationship with Mary, and he and Evie move in with her, beginning a cozy chapter in Evie’s life. One day, after Mom has been gone from the island for months, she suddenly arrives at Mary’s house, wanting to take Evie to a movie. After Mom and Evie return from their outing, Evie finds Dad crying, and he says that they will be moving from out of Mary’s house and onto a houseboat. Life on the houseboat is much lonelier for them without Mary. Mary only visits them months later and Evie overhears a conversation between the two of them...
