Chapter 18-20 Summary
In chapter 18, Ballard and Catherine arrive at their home where they part with Vaughan. Catherine appears to be somewhat ashamed of her behavior, but Ballard reassures her that he is not bothered by her actions. The following day Ballard drives around with Vaughan in order to look for Seagrave. In the evening they stop by Vaughan's apartment where Ballard looks through many photographs, including some taken before Vaughan suffered his own crash. Vaughan and Ballard spend the night on the roads and see three accidents. At the scene of the final accident, Vaughan has a sexual experience in a car that had been driven by a dentist who died in his accident.
